LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 30) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team notched its second straight win with a 4-3 decision over Division II power Abilene Christian Friday afternoon at the NM State Tennis Center.

The Aggies (9-5) have won eight of their last 10 matches after the victory over the Wildcats. Abilene Christian (17-3) suffered only its third loss of the year after winning 17-of-19 against mainly Division II competition. With the victory, NM State has won two straight after a 5-2 win at UTSA a week ago.

ACU swept the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. The sweep ended with a 9-8 result at No. 1 doubles that lasted 44 points in the final tiebreaker, but the Aggie senior co-captain duo of Natalia Salum and Manon Sylvain came up short in the match.

NM State evened the match at 1-1 after junior Ginet Pinero won in straight sets at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Ros-Polly Nguyen gave the Aggies a 2-1 advantage with her third straight singles win at the No. 6 slot in straight sets.

ACU evened the match again at 2-2 with a win two-set win at No. 2 singles. The Wildcats put pressure on the Aggies with a three-set win at No, 1 singles to take a 3-2 lead.

Sophomore Annemieke Witte helped NM State forge a 3-3 tie with a win at the No. 5 spot in straight sets.

That left the match to be decided at No. 4 singles. Salum, who has been clutch all season, continued her reputation with a three-set come-from-behind win again. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Salum bounced back to take the second 6-3. In the deciding set, Salum clinched the win in extra games at 7-5.

The Aggies hit the road for a pair of road matches in the Bay Area of northern California next week. NM State resumes WAC play at San Jose State Wednesday, April 5 at 3 p.m. before visiting Santa Clara 24 hours later.
