LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 10) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team dropped its first conference match to No. 43 Fresno State Saturday in a 7-0 decision at the NM State Softball Complex.

Fresno State (6-5, 2-0 WAC) opened with wins at all three doubles positions over New Mexico State (6-4, 1-1) to take an early 1-0 lead. The newly-ranked Bulldogs extended their match win streak to four with the victory.

The Bulldogs carried that momentum into single play to sweep all seven contests in straight sets. As a result, FS takes over the lead in the conference standings at 2-0 as NM State suffers its first WAC loss.

The loss snapped a five-match Aggie win streak and also halted senior co-captain Natalia Salum's undefeated run at eight-straight singles wins. Salum fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Sophomore Annemieke Witte was the Aggies best chance for a point in the day but fell 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.

"No. 43 Fresno State is very strong in their lineup from positions one through six," said head coach Ivan Fernandez. "Even though we fought hard, we could not find a way to win any matches today.

"Not all of the scores show how close some of these matches were today. We gave it everything we had. Today's match gave us a good idea of what we have to keep working on to compete with these top ranked teams. Now we have to regroup and get ready for UTEP on Wednesday."

NM State travels to El Paso March 14 to battle UTEP at 1 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
