Release:  03/30/2011

Las Cruces, N.M.-The women's tennis team of New Mexico State University lost a close 4-3 battle with the University of Texas-El Paso on Wednesday, March 30.

The loss snaps a 3-match winning streak by NM State over UTEP.  Last season the Aggies defeated the Miners 6-1 in El Paso.

Head tennis coach Ivan Fernandez said the team was able to start out strong in the beginning of the doubles matches.

NM State was able to pull a victory from the No. 2 match when Junior Manon Sylvain and sophomore Jodie Williams defeated Gabi Vazquez and Ximena Fuentes 8-0.

In singles, senior Isabela Kulaif defeated Martina Trierweiler 7-6, 6-3, in the No. 1 match.  Kulaif defeated her former team in singles for the second-straight year.

Junior Natalia Salum also notched a victory for the Aggies, defeating Vazquez 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 match.  Despite battle muscle cramps in mid-match, freshman Annemieke Witte was able to defeat Alexandra Glebova 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 5 match for her team-leading 8th singles win.

"UTEP has a good team and had enough today to merit this victory over us," Fernandez said.

The Aggies will travel to Logan, Utah, this weekend to face Utah State on Saturday, April 2, and Weber State on Sunday, April 3.
