Las Cruces, N.M.-The women's tennis team of New Mexico State University swept the University of Northern Colorado in every single match on Friday, Feb. 18, extending its winning streak to five matches.

This is the first match in 2011 in which the Aggies swept all singles and doubles matches.

"The girls came out focused and played hard from the beginning," said head tennis coach Ivan Fernandez.

The Aggies dominated from the start, winning all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-8 points.

Junior Manon Sylvain and sophomore Jodie Williams started off the day by defeating Stephanie Catlin and former Aggie Elizabeth Tapia 8-2 in the No. 1 match.  Sophomore Ginet Pinero and freshman Annemieke Witte followed up by defeating Adriana Nieto and Jennifer Buchanan 8-2.  Doubles play ended with an 8-4 victory by junior Natalia Salum and freshman Ros-Polly Nguyen over Lexi Filliol and Jennifer Whateley.

Salum and Nguyen are currently undefeated played together in doubles this season, extending their record to 6-0.

Sylvain led the Aggies at the top of the rotation by defeating Adrianna Nieto 6-0, 1-6, 7-5, in the No. 1 match.  Pinero earned a hard-fought victory in the No. 2 match by defeating Whateley 7-5, 7-5.  Witte defeated former Aggie Tapia 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 match.

Salum swept Catlin for the most dominating performance of the day, winning 6-0, 6-0.  Williams came within one game of sweeping Buchanan, winning 6-0, 6-1.  Nguyen played in a tough No. 6 match, defeating Jill Kappel 6-2, 6-7, 11-9.

NM State has won five straight matches despite the fact that Isabela Kulaif, the Aggies' lone senior and plays in the No. 1 spot, has missed the last three matches due to injury.

"We are on a good role," Fernandez said.  "We will see if we can keep it going."

NM State continues play tomorrow when they face the University of Seattle at 1:00 p.m.
