LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team fell to the No. 1 seed Idaho in Sunday’s 2014 WAC Tennis Championship finals at the NM State Tennis Center. The Aggies end their season 11-12 overall. No doubles matches were played in the match.

“We knew it was going to be a very good match and unfortunately we just couldn’t get it together today,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “Idaho is a very good team. The fact that we got to this point after an up and down season really shows the heart and dedication of our team. Making it all the way to the finals with a chance to win is a testament to our players and this program. We will continue to build on this opportunity in recruiting and start to prepare for next season.”

The Aggies took an early 1-0 lead in the match, as freshman Brittany Collens defeated Idaho’s Rita Bernudez, 6-2, 6-1. NM State then lost both matches at the No. 1 singles and the No. 4 singles to go down 2-1.

Sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava was downed in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to Idaho’s Victoria Lozano, while senior Annemieke Witte also fell in straight sets to the Vandals’ Sophie Vickers, 6-2, 6-2.

Idaho then went up 3-1 as senior Ros-Polly Nguyen was defeated by Idaho’s Belen Barcenilla, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 singles match. In the No. 3 singles match, junior Denise Van Der Ben was down one set to none, before battling back in the second set, making it close but in the end Idaho’s Galina Bykova was too much, winning 6-1, 6-4, giving Idaho the 2014 WAC Tennis Championship title.

No. 2 singles player, junior Susana Alcaraz was up one set to none on Almudena Sanz but the match was stopped in progress as Idaho had captured enough points for the win.
