LAS CRUCES, N.M.— The New Mexico State women’s tennis team fell to in-state rival New Mexico, 6-1, on Friday morning at the NM State Tennis Center in a match that was moved to an earlier start time due to expected high afternoon winds in Las Cruces.

The Aggies lost their fifth-straight match and second-consecutive at home to fall to 4-9 in the spring while the 66th-ranked Lobos improve to 10-6.

“Today was a tough match against No. 66 UNM,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “They came in with a lot of confidence and momentum and really played very well against us. I expected a lot more from my team and we just didn’t deliver today.”

The only win of the day for NM State came at the No. 3 spot in singles play where sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava defeated UNM’s Natasha Smith in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.

The day began with the Lobos taking the doubles’ point after junior Denise Van Der Ben and freshman Marie-Pier Thiffault lost 8-4 at the one position and the duo of Shrivastava and senior Annemieke Witte lost 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles position.

The Aggies then proceeded to lose four singles matches in straight sets with Shrivastava being the lone NM State victor.  Freshman Brittany Collens, playing at the six spot, was tied with Rachana Bhat of UNM, 6-6, in the first set and was winning the tiebreaker before she had to retire with a sprained ankle.

NM State now continues rivalry week with a short trip south to El Paso, Texas, to face I-10 rival Texas-El Paso at the El Paso Tennis Club on Sunday, March 23, beginning at 10 a.m. (MDT).

“We had a couple of close matches but could not keep up with this strong UNM team,” Fernandez said. “We have a lot of work ahead of us before the conference tournament and I expect the team to bounce back on Sunday when we play UTEP in El Paso.”
