Women’s Tennis Swings Past Southern Miss

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The New Mexico State women’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Southern Mississippi on Friday, Feb. 21, to improve to a 4-4 record this season.

“It was tough fight in the doubles. We came out fighting in the singles and won four of the six,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “Susana Alcaraz got her fifth singles win in-a-row and her first win playing No. 1 singles. Ashvarya Shrivastava and Annemieke Witte each continue to win their singles matches and extend their streaks.”

On the doubles court, NM State saw wins at the No. 1 and 2 posts for the point. Freshman Brittany Collens and senior Ros-Polly Nguyen teamed up for an 8-7 battle at the tops spot, while juniors Denise Van Der Ben and Susana Alcaraz teamed up for an 8-1 win to secure the point at the second court.

Singles action got underway with NM State picking up four wins. While Alcaraz earned a two-set win (6-2, 6-2) win at the top spot, Nguyen suffered a loss at the second spot in straight sets. NM State’s Van Der Ben won her match at the third court in three sets, but sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava and senior Annemieke Witte each pulled off two-set wins at the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

“I am very proud of the girls. They are fighting extremely hard and they are starting to build some confidence,” Fernandez said.

The Aggies continue at home with Abilene Christian on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
