LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s tennis team continues its four-match homestand this weekend with matchups versus Southern Mississippi on Friday, Feb. 21, and Abilene Christian on Sunday, Feb. 23.

Friday’s match is set for a 1 p.m. (MT) start while Sunday’s match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.  Both matches will be played at the NM State Tennis Center and are free to the public.

The Aggies are 2-0 this spring season at the NM State Tennis Center after defeating Lamar and Northern Arizona during their first-two home matches last week.  NM State has an overall record of 3-4 but has won three out of four matches after losing its first three matches of the spring.

“I am very pleased with how the team is playing,” Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “If we keep fighting this hard every match we will win a lot this season.”

The recent Aggie surge is being led by senior Annemieke Witte and junior Susana Alcaraz, both of whom have won four-consecutive singles matches.  Witte has gone undefeated in those four matches, as she and partner Ashvarya Shrivastava have won five-straight doubles’ matches.  Alcaraz, meanwhile, is 2-2 over the last four doubles matches with partner Denise Van Der Ben.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will head to Las Cruces with a 2-5 overall record, including 0-2 on the road.  Although the Golden Eagles have lost three straight, a couple of those losses were heavily contested 4-3 losses, including a loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday (Feb. 16).

Abilene Christian, meanwhile, sits at 4-2 overall and 2-1 in road matches.  The Wildcats are coming off a 6-1 home loss to the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday (Feb. 15).  ACU will play two matches in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday before heading north to face the Aggies on Sunday.  The Wildcats will face off against Southern Miss and UTEP on the Miners’ campus.

“We have two tough teams coming this weekend and we will have to play our best to win,” Fernandez said.

After this weekend’s play, NM State will head on the road for three matches in Texas from Feb. 28-March 2.
