Women’s Tennis Advances in Doubles Play

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After Day One of the ITA Mountain Regional, the New Mexico State women’s tennis team had two doubles pairs advance with wins in the first flight of the event, Wednesday, Oct. 9. Freshman Brittany Collens and junior Denise Van Der Ben won their respective singles matches also, advancing to the second round.

Seniors Annemieke Witte and Ros-Polly Nguyen defeated the pair from BYU 8-6 and the other Aggie duo, Susana Alcaraz and Van Der Ben, won 8-0 against Nevada.

In singles action, Van Der Ben beat Ellen Crum of Montana State in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). She is set to face Maddy Murray of Montana on Thursday. Collens also advances to her second round of singles matches after a 6-4, 6-1 win over her opponent from Nevada. Collens meets Morgan Anderson of BYU, who beat her opponent in straight sets, on Thursday.

Nguyen and sophomore Mia Brandt competed in the first round of regionals, but fell in their respective matches. Nguyen lost 1-6, 5-7 to her counterpart from Colorado, while Brandt battled three sets before dropping in her tournament-opening match.

The Aggies continue with the regional matchups on Thursday, Oct. 10, with the second round of doubles and the second and third round of singles matches.
