SAN DIEGO – The New Mexico State University women’s tennis team continued its busy September schedule on Friday by competing in eight singles matches and four doubles matches during the first day of the seven-team San Diego State Fall Classic being played at the Aztec Tennis Center.

The Aggies finished the day by winning half of their doubles matches and half of their singles matches as well.

“We started the day by winning two out of the four doubles,” said Aggie head coach Ivan Fernandez. “In the singles we competed extremely well everywhere, fighting in every match.”

In singles play, NM State senior Ros-Polly Nguyen won her third consecutive match, dating back to the UNLV Invitational, to head into Saturday’s semifinal match in the Gold Draw.  Nguyen won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, over Janine Koleta of San Diego.

Sophomore Ashvarya Shrivastava will compete in the other Gold-Draw semifinal.  She defeated Loyola Marymount’s Julia Norlin 6-2, 7-5.

The Silver Draw will also display an Aggie in each of its semifinals as sophomores Chloe Joliff and Mia Brandt each won their individual match on Friday.

Among the other singles matches, juniors Susana Alcaraz and Denise Van Der Ben both lost their match to top competition from Duke University.  Freshman Brittany Collens and senior Annemieke Witt, meanwhile, each lost tough three-set matches to players from host-team San Diego State.

On the doubles side, the team of Alcaraz/Van Der Ben won their match against Capannolo/Feneridis of Pepperdine, 8-4 and the team of Brandt/Jolliff defeated Finnell/Koveshnikova of Loyola Marymount, 8-2.  Meanwhile, NM State’s tandem of Nguyen/Witte was involved in a close match that had to go to a tiebreaker, eventually losing to the team of Depenau/Koleta from San Diego.  Also, Collens/Shrivastava lost 8-2 to Gunuganti/Van de Velde of Grand Canyon University.

“It was a good day against very tough competition,” Fernandez said. “I expect them (Aggies) to keep fighting the rest of the weekend.”

The San Diego Fall Classic continues Saturday with semifinal matches and consolation play in all draws.  The tournament will conclude on Sunday with championship matches as well as consolation finals.  Matches are set to begin at 10 a.m. (MT) on each day.
