LAS CRUCES, N.M. (August 6) – The New Mexico State men’s and women’s tennis programs were both honored with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Award, the ITA announced this week. The women’s team is one of just three from the Western Athletic Conference to receive the award, while the men are one of three also.

The women’s team has made the list nine of the past 10 years and seven student-athletes earning Scholar-Athlete status. Mia Brandt, Ros-Polly Nguyen, Ginet Pinero, Elizaveta Roslanova, Denise Van der Ben, Jodie Williams and Annemieke Witte made Scholar-Athlete list, marking the third time for Witte and Williams.

“After finishing the spring semester with a term GPA of 3.8 and a team cumulative GPA of 3.64 it is not too surprising that they were named to the ITA All-Academic Team,” head women’s coach Ivan Fernandez said. “I am very proud of the team for rising up to the academic challenges of being both students and athletes simultaneously.”

On the men’s side, Marc Westgate, Patrick Pfister, Naveen Manivannan, Jeremy Harlas, Daniel Fernandez and Germain Degardin were the six student-athletes on the list. Last season, just one Aggie made the Scholar-Athlete list. The team made the All-Academic list in 2011 also, marking the second time under the direction of head coach Carlos Vargas.

“It is always a great honor to be recognized by the ITA for all the hard work these student-athletes put into the classroom,” Vargas said of the award. “It makes me proud to coach such a fine group.”

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. All eligible student-athletes have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2012 and spring 2013).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters.

Both teams open the fall tournament season with the home-hosted Aggie-Invitational. The women host Sept. 13-15 and the men host Sept. 20-22. The three-day tournaments are both set to be held at the NM State Tennis Center.
