LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 14) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team is set to rekindle the Battle of I-10 on Friday, March 15, as the UTEP Miners (8-6) make the short drive north for a 2 p.m. dual with the Aggies (3-7) at the NM State Tennis Center.
NM State looks to snap the Miners' five-match winning streak on Friday afternoon and picking up two wins of its own a week ago at home against Western New Mexico and Tarleton State. The Aggies have won nine of the last 12 meetings between the teams that includes a 4-3 over UTEP during the 2012 season.
The Aggies are on the winning stride after halting the WNMU Mustangs 5-2 a week ago Friday. The team then came up with a 5-2 win over Tarleton State to cap off the weekend on March 10.
Part of the Aggie success comes from the hands of Ros-Polly Nguyen and Annemieke Witte. Nguyen boasts a 7-3 singles record this season with six of those coming at the No. 5 position. Her most recent win against Tarleton State was at the third court.
Witte is also on a hot streak in singles play with a 6-3 record and four consecutive wins for the Aggies. She teams up with Denise Van Der Ben in double competition for four wins this season at the No. 2 spot.
UTEP is led by junior Rebece Calvillo with a perfect 8-0 record at the top singles spot and a 12-2 overall record in individual play. Two of the Miners' juniors each have 10 wins this season in singles. UTEP's doubles are headed by Marie LeBlond and Gabi Vazquez with 10 wins in 13 matches at the top spot.
The battle between the Aggies and the Miners is set for 2 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center on Friday, March 15.
