Aggies Drive Past Tarleton State, 5-2

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (March 10) - The New Mexico State women's tennis team picked up its second straight win at the NM State Tennis Center with a 5-2 decision over Tarleton State on Sunday, March 10.

The Aggie got things started with a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. While Ginet Pinero and Ros-Poly Nguyen fell at the top doubles spot, Denise Van Der Ben and Annemieke Witte teamed up for a 9-8 win in the second spot. The point was secured with an 8-3 win by Mia Brandt and Jodie Williams in the third spot.

"We are slowly starting to play better and with more confidence," head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "It is good to win a couple of matches in a row before we play UTEP on Friday."

Four Aggies each claimed a win in singles play for the 5-2 victory over Tarleton State. With losses just at the first and fifth courts, Van Der Ben and picked up a two-game win (6-0, 6-3) at the second spot.

Witte, Nguyen and Mia Brandt each picked up straight-set wins for the Aggies. Van Der Ben and Nguyen took just two games at the second and third courts for the Aggie point. At the fourth court, Witte earned a 6-2 and 6-0 win for the aggies and Brandt earned her first singles win of the weekend with a 6-3 victory in set one and a point earning 6-2 victory at the sixth court.

The Aggies next host the I-10 rival UTEP Miners on March 15 at 2 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
