LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team started three-straight days of competition at the NM State Tennis Center by losing to Northern Arizona, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon to fall to 4-3 in the spring season.

The Aggies began the day on a good note, taking the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles’ matches.

Senior Marc Westgate and sophomore Liam Goldberg won 6-2 while the duo of junior Germain Degardin and sophomore Strahinja Trecakov escaped with a 6-5 win.

NM State didn’t fare that well, however, when it came to the singles matches. The Aggies could only muster one win in six singles matches.  The lone NM State win came from junior Patrick Pfister who defeated Northern Arizona’s Alan Barrios at the six spot.

“Not one of our better days,” Aggie head coach Carlos Vargas said. “We did not have the intensity or focus against a much improved NAU squad.  We’ll need to get refocused to get back on track.”

The Aggies have little time to ponder the loss as they will host two WAC opponents over the next two days.  NM State will face Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 16, and Missouri-Kansas City on Monday, Feb. 17.  Both matches are scheduled for a 1 p.m. (MT) start at the NM State Tennis Center.
