LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s and women’s tennis teams will combine for five matches from Friday through Monday, Feb. 14-17. The women will play two matches while the men will participate in three matches. All matches will be played at the NM State Tennis Center and are free to the public.
The women’s team will begin the weekend with a matchup versus Lamar on Friday, Feb. 14, starting at 1 p.m. The ladies will also host Northern Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 16, beginning at 10 a.m. The matches will be the home-opening matches for the Aggie women’s spring schedule.
The NM State women sit a 1-4 in the spring after two matches in Tucson, Ariz., and three in Las Vegas, Nev. Although the Aggies finished 1-2 in Las Vegas, they did pick up their first win of the spring season after defeating UC Riverside (6-1) and narrowly lost two matches to good opponents. NM State battled UNLV, the 58th-ranked team in the country, in a matchup that was much closer than the 5-2 final score would indicate. The Aggies then narrowly lost to another good team, Pacific, 4-3.
The Lamar Cardinals come to Las Cruces with a 1-1 spring record while Northern Arizona is 2-3 in the spring. The Lumberjacks are in the midst of a New Mexico and West Texas road trip. They lost to New Mexico in Albuquerque before defeating Western New Mexico. Northern Arizona will head to El Paso, Texas, to meet UTEP on Friday, Feb. 14, before heading to Las Cruces.
The Aggie men’s team, meanwhile, will play three matches in the three days, including two Western Athletic Conference matchups. NM State begins the weekend by facing Northern Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 15. The men will then host WAC-members Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 16, and Kansas City on Monday, Feb. 17. All three men’s matches are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
Like the women’s team, the NM State men are coming off a road trip to Las Vegas, Nev. The Aggies went 3-1 in Las Vegas, including 4-0 and 5-0 wins over UC Riverside and Weber State respectively. NM State started off the spring by going 1-1 at home. It will enter this week’s play with a 4-2 spring record.
The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks are currently 2-3 in the spring and, like their women counterparts, will play at UTEP before meeting the Aggies.
The Idaho Vandals currently sit at 3-3 and are coming off a 5-2 loss to the 44th-ranked team in the nation, Washington. They will head to Tucson to play Arizona on Friday before making the trip to NM State.
Kansas City, meanwhile, is 1-4 in the spring and has lost four-straight matches. The ‘Roos will meet Northern Arizona on Sunday at the NM State Tennis Center before their Monday matchup with the Aggies.
