LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team concluded day one of its home tournament, the Aggie Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20, in Las Cruces, N.M.

Aggie newcomer Liam Goldberg and junior Germain Degardin each advanced to the semifinal round of their flight. Goldberg earned two wins on Friday, setting him up for a match versus Abilene Christian’s Borja Cortes on Saturday. Degardin found his spot in the semifinal round after a two-set win in the opening match and a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win against his ACU counterpart in round two.

Sophomore Naveen Manivannan met similar results when he won both of his matches in straight sets. In the same draw, newcomer Thomas Douglas won in two sets (7-5, 6-2) of his first match, but fell short in his second match of the day to New Mexico’s Bryan Cunningham.

Sophomore Strahinja Trecakov sailed to two singles wins in straight sets, securing his spot in the semifinal match on Saturday versus Northern Arizona’s Alan Barrios.

In the doubles draw, Douglas and Manivannan battled their way to an 8-3 win to advance to the quarterfinals. Senior Marc Westgate and Goldberg won on their end of the same bracket, giving a chance for an Aggie-filled finals match come Sunday.

Las Cruces native Jeremy Harlas and his partner Trecakov battled for a tough 8-6 win in their first round match, making the third Aggie pair to advance in their respective flight.

The Aggies continue at the Aggie Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. MT.
