LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State men’s tennis team was represented by Marc Westgate, Daniel Fernandez and Luis Fernando-Ramirez. All three Aggies would advance to the second round of the tournament.
“It wasn’t a bad day despite the losses,” head coach Carlos Vargas said. “I thought we played well. Our play was very encouraging and if it wasn’t for 2 or 3 points here and there we had a chance to win in all of our matches. I see us only getting better from this point on.”
Fernandez took on Jeff Offerdahl of Vanderbilt but Offerdahl withdrew allowing Fernandez to advance. He then took on Syrym Abdukhalikov of Tennessee Tech. Fernandez would win 7-6, 6-2 and advance to the third round on Sunday, playing at 10:00 a.m. (MT)
Westgate faced Roger Anderson of LSU, defeating him 6-4, 6-2, before falling to Drew Lied of Michigan State in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Fernando-Ramirez received a BYE the first round and then faced Bryan Welnetz of Penn State, falling in two-sets, 6-4, 6-4.
