Aggies Drop Matches to UTSA and No. 29 Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 26) - The New Mexico State men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to UTSA and No. 29 Texas Tech at the Red Raiders' McLeod Tennis Center last weekend.

No. 29 Texas Tech (11-6) defeated the Aggies Sunday 7-0. NM State dropped a 4-3 decision to UTSA (8-9) on Saturday. After opening the season at 4-3, the Aggies (4-12, 1-2 WAC) have dropped nine straight matches.

In the first match of the weekend, UTSA opened by taking the doubles point to forge a 1-0 lead. The Aggies and Roadrunners split the six singles matches with three wins apiece to give UTSA the one-point victory.

All three Aggie victories were in straight sets. Junior Luis Ramirez won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Germain Degardin won in similar fashion at the No. 4 slot, 7-6, 6-4. Classmate Patrick Pfister knocked off 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.

In the weekend finale the Aggies lost a trio of three-set singles matches against Texas Tech in the final three matches contested. At No. 6 singles Pfister fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Ramirez lost 5-7, 7-5 and 11-9 in the superbreaker at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Felipe Frattini lost 4-6, 7-6 and 10-5 in the superbreaker.

The Aggie men's tennis team looks to snap its losing streak when it hosts three home matches this weekend. NM State hosts UT-Arlington at 1 p.m. Friday, March 30 at the NM State Tennis Center. The Aggies face Northern Arizona on Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m. before finishing the weekend against WAC rival Idaho on Sunday, April 1, at 10 a.m.
