Men's Tennis Drops Pair of 5-2 Matches at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (March 12) - The New Mexico State men's tennis team dropped a pair of 5-2 matches against San Diego State and Arizona at the Wildcats' at the Robson Tennis Center as of Monday.

The Aggies (4-8, 1-0 WAC) opened their weekend in Tucson with a 5-2 defeat to fellow visitor No. 47 San Diego State in a neutral-site match.

NM State swept the doubles matches but was unable to capitalize on the early team lead.  The Aggies later dropped four of the six singles matches.

The No. 47 Aztecs swept all three doubles matches to win the doubles point and lead 1-0.

SDSU carried the momentum to the singles courts and quickly earned the team match point with three straight victories at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 singles.

NM State salvaged two points in three-set matches that ended in superbreakers at the Nos. 1 and 4 positions to conclude the match.  Aggie senior captain Matej Stakne earned the first team point with a comeback victory at the No. 1 slot, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Freshman Germain Degardin clinched the Aggies' final team point at No. 4 singles. Degardin also came from behind from a set down to take the second and win a superbreaker, 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-4.

On Monday, NM State ended up with the same 5-2 final result against Arizona on the Wildcats' home court.

UofA swept the doubles matches to  claim the doubles point and gain an early 1-0 edge.

Aggie freshman Patrick Pfister tied the match at 1-1 after quickly taking care of business at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-0.

The Wildcats moved ahead 3-1 with wins at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots.

Stakne gave NM State its second point with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 slot.

Arizona clinched the team match point with a three-set win at the No. 2 position and grabbed a final point at the No. 3 slot to complete the day.

NM State returns to action March 20 at Fresno State for a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup.
