It marks the first win over a ranked team for NM State (4-3) this season in four attempts. The last Aggie victory over a ranked team occurred last April 30 when NM State beat No. 51 Idaho 4-2 in the 2011 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) semifinals. Meanwhile, UNLV (3-3) suffered its first loss at home this year.
"We had big wins today," said head coach Carlos Vargas. "Luis Ramirez got us started in singles after a great doubles point victory. Marc Westgate followed with a win and Matej Stakne clinched the team match point. Felipe Frattini solidified our day with a come-from-behind win to make it 5-2.
"Germain Degardin and Eduardo Cabrita lost hard-fought matches today. It was a great overall effort. We continue to improve and show great character on the court."
Ramirez finished the weekend undefeated at 3-0 in both doubles and singles this weekend. He and Stakne teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles 8-5. Degardin and Cabrita posted an 8-4 win on doubles court three. Westgate and Frattini finished just short at No. 2 doubles, falling 8-6.
With the doubles point in hand, Ramirez was the first off the court by winning his No. 4 singles match in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. On singles court two, Westgate followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to put NM State up 3-0 early in the match.
The other four singles matches went three sets and NM State won two of them.
Stakne secured the match at the top spot. After dropping the first set 6-3, Stakne bounced back to win the final two sets by the same 6-3 set score to give the Aggies the clinching match point.
Frattini was the final Aggie victor on the day. The sophomore lost 6-4 in the first stanza at No.5 singles but completed the comeback with a 6-3 win in set two and a tough 7-5 victory in the deciding set.
Degardin and Cabrita each lost in three sets; nevertheless the Aggies claimed a huge victory over a ranked team on the road.
After their perfect 3-0 weekend, the Aggies return home to begin a three-match home stand starting with rival New Mexico on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at the NM State Tennis Center.
The match will be another battle of ranked teams as the Lobos currently sit two spots ahead of NM State in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings at No. 57.
