Release:  05/24/2011

Stanford, Calif.-New Mexico State University men's tennis team senior Arthur Surreaux will face No. 19 John Peers from Baylor University in the opening round of singles in the Division I NCAA Championships tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. (MT).

Surreaux, currently ranked No. 85 in singles, was the only player from the entire Western Athletic Conference to be selected to compete in the singles bracket of the Division I NCAA Championships.

Surreaux finished the 2010-11 season 21-15 overall in singles, playing a majority of the dual matches in the No. 1 spot. The highlight of Surreaux's season came in the fall where he compiled three tournament titles and a 15-2 record for one of the best performances ever by an Aggie during tournament season. Surreaux won the singles and doubles title of the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces back on Sept. 12, 2010. Surreaux also won the singles title of the Baylor Invitational on Sept. 26, 2010. Surreaux's outstanding performance during the month earned him the honor of WAC Player of the Month for September.

Peers is a senior at Baylor who joined the team in Fall 2010. Peers went 29-12 overall during the 2010-11 season and 17-7 in the spring. Peers played all but one match at the No. 1 spot for Baylor, earning a 16-7 record in the No. 1 spot. Over the course of the fall and spring seasons, Peers went 12-12 against nationally-ranked opponents. Despite Peers' record, he has lost his last four consecutive singles matches.
