LAS CRUCES, N.M.— The New Mexico State men’s tennis team celebrated Senior Day by defeating UT-Permian Basin, 7-0, on Sunday at the NM State Tennis Center to conclude the 2014 spring schedule.
The win puts the Aggies over .500 at 11-10 heading into the WAC Championships will be played in a couple of weeks at NM State’s home courts. The Aggies will also head into the conference tournament winners of three-straight matches.
Seniors Marc Westgate, Naveen Manivannan and Guilherme Carvalho were recognized on Sunday as the trio played their final regular-season match as part of the NM State team.
Westgate and Manivannan got things started in the right direction for the Aggies after teaming up and winning at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-6. NM State also took the other two doubles’ matches to win the doubles’ point.
The Aggies would also sweep the singles matches en route to the 7-0 victory. Westgate and Falcon Justin Pena had a tough three-set match at the one spot, which Westgate would eventually win, 7-6, 5-7, 10-6, in extra points. The rest of the NM State victories, however, would come in straight sets.
Sophomore Strahinja Trecakov beat Alvaro Sifuentes, 6-4, 6-2, sophomore Paul Denele won 6-3, 6-3 over Adam Cheney, sophomore Liam Goldberg won at No. 3 over Caio Aguiar 6-1, 6-0, Manivannan beat Keaton McCormick 6-3, 6-1 and Carvalho won 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 6 court over Jaxon Immier.
The WAC Championships will be played from Friday, April 25, through Sunday, April 27, at the NM State Tennis Center, where the Aggies are 7-4 on the season at home.
