LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team concludes its five-match road swing with three matches this weekend. The Aggies begin the weekend in the Sacramento, Calif., area with matchups versus UC-Davis on Friday, March 14, and Sacramento State on Saturday, March 15, before heading to Santa Clara, Calif., to face Santa Clara on Sunday, March 16. Friday and Saturday’s matches are set for a 1 p.m. (MDT) start while Sunday’s match has a 10 a.m. (MDT) start time.
NM State currently sits at 7-6 on the season and will try to break a three-match losing streak heading into this weekend’s matchups. The Aggies have lost their previous two matches at an opponent’s home court.
The UC-Davis Aggies, like the Crimson and White Aggies, have a 7-6 overall record. The California Aggies are in the midst of a five-match homestand. UC-Davis is 5-2 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center including winning its first-two matches during the current homestand.
Sacramento State is also in the middle of a five-match homestand. The Hornets are 4-9 overall and 3-3 at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club, but have shutout their last two opponents at home, Portland State and Southern Utah, by a score of 7-0.
Perhaps the toughest match of the weekend for NM State will be its matchup with Santa Clara. The Broncos are ranked 43rd in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Santa Clara is 9-2 on the spring season and had won eight-consecutive matches before being upset at home by St. Johns (NY), 5-2, on Sunday, March 9.
The loss to the Red Storm was the first for the Broncos at the Degheri Tennis Center this season. They are now 6-1 at home. Santa Clara’s only other loss this season came at the hands of Southern California, which is ranked No. 2 by the ITA.
