LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s tennis team opens the 2013 fall tournament season with the Aggie Invitational, Sept. 20-22, at the NM State Tennis Center.
The Aggies welcome in-state opponents New Mexico and Western New Mexico as well as University of Arizona, Northern Arizona, Arizona Christian, UT Permian Basin and Abilene Christian. This marks the first season that Abilene Christian will compete as a Division I program, after advancing to the finals of the Lone Star Conference championship in 2013.
The Lobos finished the 2013 spring dual season ranked No. 72 by the ITA and claimed the University of North Carolina-Wilmington Collegiate Invitational title a week ago.
The Aggies return eight from the 2012-13 team, including lone senior, Marc Westgate. He worked for a 13-7 singles record during spring play last season and a 19-10 doubles record with departed senior Luis Ramirez.
The Aggies bring in two newcomers for the upcoming season. Australian’s Thomas Douglas and Liam Goldberg join the Aggies after spending one season at Ventura College and Lake Erie College, respectively.
Douglas led his team with a stellar 15-3 singles record and was named All-Western State Conference first team. Goldberg lost just seven singles sets all season while at Lake Erie. He finished individually with a 14-3 record and started his freshman campaign with an eight-match winning streak.
The three-day Aggie Invitational gets started on Friday, Sept. 20, at 9 a.m., and continues with the same start time on Saturday and Sunday. Check NMStateSports.com for results following the conclusion of each day.
