NM State Menís Tennis has Success in First Day of ITA Mountain Regional

LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- The New Mexico State men's tennis team started competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championships, Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aggies won seven of eight singles matches on day one.


The tournament includes players from 16 universities in the region, and the draw includes both singles and doubles action.


In singles action on Wednesday, freshman Yannick Blank defeated Fredrik Peterson of Utah State, (6-2, 6-2) , as freshman Naveen Manivannan beat  Zeno Kastelic of Utah State, (6-1, 6-0). Sophomore Germain Degardin defeated Oliver Good of Weber State, State, (6-7, 6-3, 6-4) as freshman Stahinja Trecakov beat Brandon Nielsen of Utah State (5-7, 6-4, 6-3).


Freshman Daniel Fernandez handled Cody Miller of UNLV, (6-1, 6-1) and junior Marc Westgate defeated Diego Campos of Montana State, (6-4, 6-4).


Eduardo Cabrita lost to Mads Hegelund of New Mexico, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. He moved to the back draw and faced Eric Braun of Montana winning 7-5, 7-6.


In the doubles draw, Cabrita and Trecakov fell to Nevada's Moez Charqui and Andrew Poustie, 8-5 and Blank and Degardin fell to Montana State's Niklas Brandes and Campos, 8-6.


In the back draw for the doubles tournament, Cabrita and Trecakov dropped their match up against Hegelund/McDaniels of New Mexico, 8-3.


The Aggies will be back in action for day two of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, Thursday.
