LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 26) - New Mexico State men's tennis head coach Carlos Vargas will take three of his Aggies to the 2012 ITA Men's All-American Championships conducted by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus beginning Saturday.
The nine-day national tournament features pre-qualifying, qualifying and main draw flights of both singles and doubles draws. Three Aggies will begin play in the pre-qualifying singles flight on Saturday. They include senior captain Luis Ramirez, junior Marc Westgate and freshman Daniel Fernandez.
The pre-qualifying draw could consist of up to 256 players. Student-athletes must win up to four rounds to advance to the qualifying flight that begins Oct. 1. First and second round matches will take place on Saturday followed by later rounds on Sunday. There is not a scheduled consolation draw for the pre-qualifying section.
Ramirez is coming off of a solid outing last week at the Aggie Invitational that saw the captain advance to the singles semifinals before bowing out to claim third place overall. He enters the Championships with a 3-1 ledger this season.
Fernandez made his Aggie debut last week by winning his first two career singles matches to break into the quarterfinals. The newcomer fell in three sets to Arizona's Giacomo Miccini in his quarterfinal match. Fernandez finished the weekend with a singles mark of 2-1.
Westgate won his first round match last weekend in Las Cruces. The junior ran into trouble later in the weekend, dropping two matches to account for his 1-2 singles record entering this week.
No Aggie doubles teams will be in action this weekend.
