LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team heads to Maricopa, Ariz., to participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic scheduled for Monday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 8, at the par-72, 6,231-yard AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
The three-round tournament begins with the first two rounds on Monday. Round one is scheduled for an 8:45 a.m. (MDT) shotgun start with the second round in the afternoon. Tuesday will be reserved for the final 18 holes of the tournament.
The Cowgirl Classic is the final tune-up for the Aggies before the WAC Championships, which begin on Friday, April 25, in nearby Mesa, Ariz. NM State will be able to gauge itself against a couple of Western Athletic Conference teams as conference members Seattle and Utah Valley will also be part of the tournament.
Other teams competing alongside the Aggies in the 20-team field include: host Wyoming, I-10 rival UTEP, Boise State, Eastern Washington, Lamar, Montana State, Montana, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Oral Roberts, Portland State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Tulsa, BYU and Weber State.
NM State will carry the same team it competed with during its previous tournament to the Cowgirl Classic. Freshmen Valeria Macias, Camille Orito and Kristen Cline along with sophomores Viviana Macias and Kacey Dalpes will try to carry the momentum gained from the Mountain View Collegiate into Maricopa.
During the Mountain View, the Aggies had their two lowest rounds of the season (291, 295) and their best total-team score of the season (+24 888) en route to a tie for sixth place finish. Viviana Macias capped off an impressive month of March with a 10th-place finish, marking her career-best total score (+2 218) and tying her career-low round (-1 71). For her efforts she was rewarded with NM State’s first WAC Golfer of the Week honor of the season after posting her fifth-consecutive top-20 finish.
This is the eighth year of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic and the first time it will be played at the AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. The Aggies will be participating in their fourth-consecutive Cowgirl Classic. NM State’s best finish at the tournament was a second-place finish in 2011. The Aggies’ best individual performance was also in 2011 when former NM State golfer Suteera Chanachai finished at even par and in a tie for third.
The Aggies finished in 18th place during last year’s Cowgirl Classic. Boise State swept the team and individual titles in 2013. The Broncos carded a total-team score of 37-over 901 while Hayley Young won the individual crown at 2-under 214.
