LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State sophomore Viviana Macias has been named the Western Athletic Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for the week of March 24-30, the conference announced Wednesday.

This is Macias’ first golfer of the week honor while at NM State.  The Guadalajara, Mexico, native helped the Aggies finish in a tie for sixth place at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., after posting a career-best total score of 2-over par 218 to finish in 10th place.  Macias broke her previous career best by four strokes.

She kicked off the tournament by shooting an even-par 72 during the first round and capped off the tournament by tying her career-low round, a 1-under par 71 in the final round. It is the first time in her NM State career that Macias has shot two rounds of par or better in a single tournament.

“It has been exciting to see Vivi's fight on the golf course and her great mental attitude turn into low scores,” Aggie head coach Jackie Booth said. “She has put together two great finishes in the last two tournaments. We are looking forward to her continued leadership for the rest of the season.”

Macias’ 10th place finish at the Mountain View Collegiate is her second top-10 performance of the season and her fifth-consecutive top-20 finish.  She is playing her best golf at the right time as the Aggies are less than a month away from the WAC Championships.

NM State plays one more tournament before heading to the conference championships.  The Aggies’ final tune-up will be at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Maricopa, Ariz., being held April 7-8.
