TUCSON, Ariz. – A season-best 7-over-par 295 during the second round of the Mountain View Collegiate on Friday propelled the New Mexico State women’s golf team to a tie for eighth place finish after the first day of play at the par-72, 6,227-yard Mountain View Golf Club.

The first two rounds of the tournament were played on Friday in Arizona.  The Aggies coupled their best round of the season with a 14-over 302 in the opening round to finish with a two-round total of 21-over-par 597 (302-295) and in a tie with Northern Arizona.

Sisters Viviana and Valeria Macias find themselves in a group of 10 golfers tied for 14th place after day one of the tournament.  Both sisters will head into the final round on Saturday with a total score of 3-over 147.

Viviana kicked off the day in the right direction for NM State after shooting her third round of par or better this season in round one, an even-par 72.  Macias found herself in a tie for eighth, only four shots off the lead, after the morning round.  Valeria was also in the top 20 after round one, carding a 2-over 74 to finish round one in a tie for 20th.

The other three Aggie golfers, sophomore Kacey Dalpes and freshmen Camille Orito and Kristen Cline, all finished the first round with the same score, a 6-over 78, which put them in a tie for 57th place along with eight other golfers.

It was Orito, however, that led the charge during NM State’s best round of the season.  The freshman from Fresno, Calif., shot a career-low even-par 72 during the second round, her first round of par or better of her short Aggie career.

Orito’s even-par round led a NM State group that didn’t have a golfer shoot above 3-over par in the round as Viviana, Dalpes and Cline all shot 3-over 75 while Valeria was right behind Orito at 1-over-par 73.

Orito will start Saturday’s final 18 holes in a tie for 34th place at 6-over 150 (78-72) while Dalpes and Cline will begin the final round with a 9-over 153 and in a tie for 46th place after mirroring each other’s scores during the first two rounds (78-75).

Nebraska holds a five-stroke lead heading into the final round over Kent State.  The Huskers sit at 3-over-par 579 (291-288) after shooting the best team-round of the day in round two, an even-par 288.  Kent State is at 8-over 584 (292-292) after consecutive 4-over rounds while Gonzaga rounds out the top 3 at 10-over 586 (289-297).

The top 3 individual golfers all started round two tied with Viviana at even par.  Alice Kim of Gonzaga holds the lead after round two with a 4-under-par 140 (72-68).  Nebraska’s Cassie Deeg sits in second a couple of shots back at 2-under 142 (72-70) while Minnesota’s Carmen Laguna and Katelyn Wright of Nebraska are tied for third at 1-under 143.

The Mountain View Collegiate concludes on Saturday with the final 18 holes of the three-round tournament.  The final round is set to begin a 9 a.m. (MDT) with a shotgun start.
