Macias in Top 15 After Two Rounds of Clover Cup

MESA, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team wrapped up round two of the 2014 Notre Dame Clover Cup on Saturday by shooting a 16-over-par 304 at the par-72, 6,209-yard Longbow Golf Club.  The Aggies will head into Sunday’s final round tied with Cincinnati for 14th place with a total score of 39-over 615 (311-304).

NM State and the Bearcats are only one shot behind 13th-place St. John’s and two shots behind 12th-place Florida International.

Aggie sophomore Viviana Macias shot a team-best even par on Saturday to finish in a tie for 14th place heading into the final round with a total score of 4-over-par 148 (76-72).  Macias had one birdie and one bogey on the day while shooting par on the remaining 16 holes to finish one stroke behind her career-best round.

Fellow sophomore Kacey Dalpes carded a 2-over 74 during the second 18 holes, including a couple of birdies, and will start round three in a tie for 31st place with a two-round score of 8-over-par 152 (78-74).

Freshman Camille Orito sits at 10-over 154 (78-76) and in a tie for 43rd place after shooting 4-over 76 on Saturday, also one shot off of her career-low round.  Orito sank a team-high three birdies on the day and has five total birdies in two days of play to tie Dalpes for the team lead.

Rounding out the NM State squad is freshman Valeria Macias in a tie for 70th with a total score of 17-over 161 (80-81) and junior Paige Darwin at 19-over 163 (80-83) and in a tie for 79th place.

Colorado continues to possess the team lead but saw its lead cut from six strokes after round one to two strokes after Saturday’s second round.  The Buffaloes will begin the final round at 13-over-par 589 (292-297).  Louisville and host Notre Dame, which were tied for third place after the first round, round out the top-3 teams.  The Cardinals are at 15-over 591 (299-292) after shooting 4-over on Saturday while the Fighting Irish are at 19-over 595 (299-296).

Colorado’s Jennifer Coleman moved from one shot behind first-round leader Kristina Nhim to one shot ahead of the Notre Dame golfer.  Coleman carded a 2-under-par 70 in round two to take the tournament lead with a total score of 5-under 139 (69-70).  Nhim and Michigan’s Grace Choi are one shot back and in a tie for second at 4-under-par 140.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with the final 18-hole round, which is set to begin at 9 a.m. (MDT) with a shotgun start.  Fans can follow the action live with hole-by-hole live scoring at www.golfstat.com
