TARZANA, Calif. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team finished the first two rounds of the Bruin-Wave Invitational on Monday by carding a two-round score of 66-over-par 642.  The Aggies shot a 34-over 322 during round one and a 32-over 320 during round two.

NM State will begin Tuesday’s final round at the par-72, 6,173-yard El Caballero Country Club in 17th place in a field filled with some of the best teams in the country, including the top-2 teams in the nation.

The Aggies are led by sophomore Kacey Dalpes, who was only four shots back of the lead after round one.  Dalpes birdied the final two holes of her first round to finish the morning round at 1-over-par 73, the best round for any NM State golfer on the day.

Dalpes shot an 8-over 80 during round two to finish with a total two-round score of 9-over-par 153 (73-80).  She will begin the final 18 holes on Tuesday in a tie for 31st place along with five other golfers.

Junior Paige Darwin marked two rounds in the low 80s on Monday.  She shot a 9-over 81 during the first round and an 8-over 80 during round two to finish the day at 17-over-par 161 (81-80).  Darwin moved from a tie for 65th after the morning round to a tie for 64th place after two rounds.  She, as Dalpes, had three birdies throughout the first-two rounds.

Aggie freshmen Valeria Macias and Camille Orito both shot a 12-over-par 84 in round one.  Macias had the best second-round score for NM State, a 7-over 79.  She will start the final round in a tie for 70th place with a total score of 19-over-par 163 (84-79).

Orito, a California native, is a couple of shots behind Macias and in a tie for 79th at 21-over 165 (84-81).  Junior Laura Barron, meanwhile, sits at 36-over-par 180 (86-94) and in 88th place.

As to be expected, the top-2 teams in the country sit at 1-2 in the team standings after two rounds of play.  The No. 1 team in the nation, Southern California, shot a tournament record 11-under-par during round two of play to go from fourth place and five shots out of the lead, to the top of the leaderboard with a total score of 3-under-par 573 (296-277) heading into Tuesday.

The two host schools, UCLA and Pepperdine, will chase USC for the tournament championship on Tuesday.  The No. 2 Bruins will start the final 18 holes in second place, five shots back with a total score of 2-over 578 (292-286) while the Wave, who led after round one, sit in third at 5-over 581 (291-290).

Individually, Doris Chen of USC holds a one-shot lead over teammate Kyung Kim, UCLA’s Alison Lee and Julie Yang of Oklahoma State.  Chen was in a tie for eighth after shooting even par in the first round, but used a tournament-high 5-under-par 67 round in the afternoon to finish at 5-under.

Yang and UCLA golfer Louise Ridderstrom held the first-round lead after shooting a 3-under 69 morning round.  While Yang only fell to a tie for second place, Ridderstrom’s day took a turn for the worse after being disqualified during round two.

The final 18 holes of the Bruin-Wave Invitational will be played on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. (MT) start time.  Fans can follow the action live with live scoring on www.golfstat.com.
