WAHIAWA, Hawai’i – The New Mexico State women’s golf team kicked off play at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday by shooting a 17-over-par 305 at the par-72, 6,228-yard Leilehua Golf Course to finish in a tie for third after round one.

The Aggies find themselves tied with Colorado State, six shots behind leader Sacramento State, which finished at 11-over 299, and one shot behind host Hawai’i, which finished at 16-over 304.

After starting the day with a double bogey on her first hole, NM State freshman Valeria Macias came back strong, sinking three birdies on the back nine to finish with the Aggies’ low round of the day.  She will start the second round at 2-over-par 74 and in a tie for fourth place, one shot behind the trio of Sacramento State’s Tiffany Nichols, Northern Arizona’s Kaitlen Parsons and Lea Garner of BYU who all finished with a 1-over 73 to share the first-round lead.

Sophomore Kacey Dalpes finished in a tie for ninth, one shot behind Macias at 3-over 75.  Junior Paige Darwin, meanwhile, is a couple of shots behind Dalpes at 5-over-par 77 and in a tie for 18th place.

Rounding out the Aggie squad are sophomore Viviana Macias and junior Laura Barron, both of whom sit at 7-over-par 79 and in a tie for 26th place.
