Release:  09/23/2013

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team wrapped up the first two rounds of play at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational on Monday, finishing in sixth place out of 15 teams with a total-team score of 62-over-par 638 (314-324).

The tournament, being played at the par-72, 6,181-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course, will conclude on Tuesday with one final 18-hole round.

The Aggies started off strong during the morning’s first round, sitting in fourth place after the first 18 holes.  Their team score of 26-over 314 left NM State only one stroke behind Kansas State and Nebraska who were tied for the second spot at 25-over.

A pleasant surprise for the Aggie squad after round one was the play of freshman Camille Orito who was making her debut for NM State.  Not only did Orito finish as the top golfer for the Aggies after the first round, the Fresno, Calif., native was tied for third place overall after shooting a 3-over 75, only three shots off of the lead.  Orito holed three birdies during her first round for the Crimson and White.

Orito capped off her first day of collegiate golf by shooting a 10-over-par 82 during round two to finish the day with a two-round score of 13-over 157.  Although she fell out of the top 10, Orito still sits in a good position, a tie for 16th, heading into the final round.

The only NM State golfer to finish ahead of Orito is sophomore Kacey Dalpes.  Two consecutive rounds of 6-over 78 have put Dalpes at 12-over-par 156.  She will start Tuesday’s round in 13th place and in a familiar place, atop the Aggie leaderboard.  Both Dalpes and Orito finished the first two rounds with four total birdies to lead NM State.

Rounding out the Aggie golfers are sophomore Viviana Macias who shot two rounds of 8-over-par 80 to finish at 16-over 160 and in a tie for 22nd, younger sister Valeria Macias who is in a tie for 60th place with a total score of 26-over-par 170 (86-84) and junior Laura Barron who sits at 27-over-par 171 (81-90) and in a tie for 62nd.

Overall, the two in-state schools, Kansas and host Kansas State, have finished on top after each of the first two rounds, with the Jayhawks leading in both rounds.  Kansas, which led by 10 strokes after round one, increased its lead over Kansas State after the second round and now has a commanding 13-stroke lead with a total-team score of 26-over-par 602 (303-299).

Kansas golfer Yupaporn Kawinpakorn shot an even-par 72 in round one to take a two-stroke lead heading into the afternoon round.  At the conclusion of round two, however, Kawinpakorn was joined atop the leaderboard by Kansas State’s Gianna Misenhelter.  Both ladies will enter the final round with a total score of 2-over 146.  Misenhelter, who was tied with Orito in third place after the first round, shot the only round under par of the day, a 1-under 71, during round two to tie Kawinpakorn for the lead.

The Sunflower Invite concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes of the tournament.  NM State, who is only five shots behind fifth place Oral Roberts, will look to take home a top-5 finish and start a season with consecutive top-5 finishes for the first time since 2002.
