LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Sept. 19, 2013) – The New Mexico State women’s golf team is set for its second tournament of the year heading to the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 23-24.
The tournament, hosted by Kansas State, is a three-round, two day tournament that is being played on the par-72, 6,181 yard Colbert Hills course. The 15-team field includes the following teams: Arkansas State, Colorado State, Creighton, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, New Mexico State, North Texas, Northern Iowa, Oral Roberts, Redlands (Community College), Southern Illinois, Tulsa, UMKC and Wichita State.
The Aggies played in the 2012 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and tied for sixth, with Middle Tennessee State and Illinois State, while former Aggie Aileen Meredith was the top finisher as she tied for 11th with a 234 (80-80-74).
Playing for NM State this week will be sophomore Kacey Dalpes, sophomore Viviana Macias, freshman Valeria Macias, freshman Camille Orito and junior Laura Barron.
The Aggies placed third in their first tournament of the year, the 2013 Hobble Creek Invite, and hope for the same, if not better, results in the second tournament this season. Dalples placed ninth in the first tournament was the NM State’s top finisher with a three round score of 225 (78-75-72). The Macias sisters tied for 21st in that same tournament and Barron was just two strokes behind them to finish tied for 24th. Head coach Jackie Booth is excited to see how freshman Camille Orito in her first career tournament as an Aggie.
