First Round in the Books at Cowgirl Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. (April 8) – The New Mexico State University women’s golf team concluded the first round of the Cowgirl Classic on Monday with a total-team score of 50-over-par 338, which places them in 18th place.

The tournament, hosted by the University of Wyoming and being played at the par 72, 6,299-yards Ocotillo Golf Resort, continues with round two on Tuesday.

Freshman Kacey Dalpes leads the Aggies after the first round, finishing with a 9-over 81.  She will start the second round in a tie for 33rd.

Junior Amelie Buhl finished a couple of shots behind Dalpes at 11-over-par 83.  Her round was highlighted by a two-shot birdie on the par-3 16th hole.  Buhl is tied for 48th place with 10 other golfers.

Freshman Viviana Macias and sophomore Laura Barron both finished their first round at 15-over-par 87.  They are part of a seven-golfer group that is tied for 79th place.  Macias had the only other birdie for NM State during Monday’s round.

Rounding out the Aggie team is sophomore Paige Darwin who is tied for 100th place with a 20-over 92.  Also, senior Marisa Bautista, who is playing as an individual golfer, sits in 103rd with a 22-over-par 94.

Boise State is the overall leader after round one.  The Broncos finished with a total-team score of 19-over-par 307.  Northern Arizona, who is the only two-time winner of the tournament (2007, 2009), sits in second with a 26-over 314 while NM State rival UTEP finished in third by carding a 30-over-par 318.  The Miners are also previous winners of the Cowgirl Classic (2010).

The same three teams on top of the leader board also have the top three players in the individual standings. 

Bronco Hayley Young is the only golfer to shoot a round under par on Monday and leads the field with a 1-under 71.  Northern Arizona’s Kaitlen Parsons and UTEP’s Camino Sardinero both shot a 3-over-par 75 on Monday and are tied for second place, four shots back of Young.

Tuesday’s second round will begin at 7:30 a.m. (MT).  The tournament will conclude on Wednesday with the final 18 holes.
