Dalpes Two Shots Behind Leader After First Round in California

INDUSTRY HILLS, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2013) - The New Mexico State women's golf team concluded its first round of the spring season on Sunday by shooting a 36-over-par 320 at the Folino Invitational being played at the par 71, 6,067-yards Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms. 

The Aggies' score places them in a tie for ninth with Cal-Poly heading into the second round on Monday.

Freshman sensation Kacey Dalpes once again leads NM State on the leader's scoreboard.  Dalpes sank three birdies on the day and finished with a 4-over-par 75 round, placing her in a tie for seventh with three other players. 

Sophomore Laura Barron matched Dalpes' three birdies with three birdies of her own, including a two-shot birdie on the par-3 14th hole.  Barron shot a 7-over-par 78 during round one which places her in a tie for 20th place. 

Among the other three NM State golfers, newcomer Viviana Macias sank her first birdie as an Aggie and finished with a 10-over-par 81 to finish in a tie for 34th.  Junior Amelie Buhl finished in 61st place with a 15-over-par 86 while senior Aileen Meredith shot a 17-over-par 88 to finish in 64th place.

Defending tournament champion Gonzaga picked up right where they left off last year and finished play Sunday as the first-round leader with a total team score of 19-over-par 303.  Boise State finished four shots behind with a 23-over-par 307, while Wyoming and Portland State finished in a tie for third at 28-over-par 312.

Individually, host school Cal State Fullerton's Kristen Aiu, who is playing as an individual player and not as part of the Fullerton team, leads the field after round one by shooting a 2-over-par 73.  Five players are one shot behind Aiu at 3-over-par 74 while four others, including Dalpes, are two shots behind at 4-over-par 75.

The three-round tournament continues with 18 holes on Monday and concludes with the final 18-hole round on Tuesday.  Monday's round is scheduled to begin at 8:20 a.m. (MT).
