Aggie Golfer One Shot Behind Leader After First Round of Home Tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 8)- The New Mexico State women's golf team concluded the first round of its home tournament, the Price's "Give Em' Five" Intercollegiate, at the New Mexico State University Golf Course shooting an 11-over-par 299 to finish the first day of the three-day tournament in sixth place.

Freshman Kacey Dalpes leads the Aggies, as she shot a 2-under-par 70 to put her one shot behind leader Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas.  Dalpes had the lead after finishing her round, but Kawinpakorn birdied two of her last three holes to finish with a 3-under-par 69 and the lead.  Dalpes finished with three birdies of her own, all on par-5 holes.

Among the other golfers on the Aggie team, senior Aileen Meredith also had three birdies on the day and shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish in a tie for 22nd, sophomore Laura Barron finished one shot behind Meredith with a 4-over-par 76 to put her in a tie for 31st, junior Amelie Buhl shot a 6-over-par 78 to tie for 48th and sophomore Paige Darwin finished in a tie for 56th with a 7-over-par 79.  Each golfer had at least one birdie after the first round.

NM State also had three golfers participating as individuals.  Junior Meike Canaan finished in a tie for 38th with a 5-over-par 77 and three birdies, senior Marisa Bautista shot a 9-over-par 81 which placed her in a tie for 66th and senior Cheryl Lo finished in a tie for 73rd with a 12-over-par 84.

Idaho will enter the second round of the tournament with a four-stroke lead over Kansas.  Idaho was the runner-up during last year's tournament, losing to eventual champion Baylor by one stroke.  The Vandals shot a 2-over-par 290 while the Jayhawks finished with a 6-over-par 294. 

The tournament continues, Tuesday, Oct. 9 with an 8:30 a.m. (MT) shotgun start.  The three-round tournament will conclude, Wednesday, Oct. 10.
