FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Sept. 10, 2012) - The New Mexico State women's golf team finished the first two rounds of the Colonel Bill Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic, which is being played at the Ptarmigan Country Club, with a team score of 637 (320, 317), placing them in 17th.
Although struggling, the Aggies had a bright spot in the play of freshman golfer, and two-time defending New Mexico high school state champion, Kacey Dalpes. Dalpes finished the first two rounds with an 8-over-par 152 total score placing her in a tie for 36th. She shot a 5-over-par 77 during her first round as an Aggie and topped the day off by firing a 3-over-par 75 in her second round. Dalpes finished with four birdies on the day, two in each round.
Senior Aileen Meredith finished right behind Daples after the first round, shooting a 6-over-par 78. She fell back, however, after her second round score of 9-over-par 81. Meredith's total score of 15-over-par 159 puts her in a tie for 72nd heading into the final round.
Among the rest of the NM State golfers, junior Amelie Buhl finished the first two rounds with a total score of 17-over-par 161which places her 77th, sophomore Laura Barron finished 87th with a two-round total score of 26-over-par 170 and fifth-year senior Cheryl Lo finished in a tie for 89th with a two-round total score 28-over-par 172.
Overall, Texas Tech has a commanding 11-stroke lead heading into the final round, shooting a two-round team total 1-under-par 575. The Lady Raiders are the only team in the field to finish under par after the first two rounds. The Aggies' in-state rival, New Mexico, sits in second after two rounds with a 10-over-par 586 total score. Defending Western Athletic Conference champion San Jose State and Texas Tech were tied on top of the leader board after the first round of play at 1-over-par. The Spartans, however, struggled in the second round shooting 18-over-par. They now sit in sevneth place with a two-round total score of 19-over-par 596.
Individually, UNM golfer Manon DeRoey finished the first two rounds with a total score of 7-under-par 137, placing her three strokes ahead of a Texas Tech golfers Gabriella Dominguez and Kimberly Kaufman who both finished the first day at 4-under par.
