Release:  03/01/2012

TARZANA, Calif. (March 1, 2012) - The New Mexico State women's golf team heads to California to participate in the Bruin-Wave Invitational, hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine University, March 5-6.

The tournament will be played at El Caballero Country Club, a par 72, 6,131 yard course located in Tarzana, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles.  It will consist of three rounds with the first two rounds being played on Monday (March 5) and the final round being played on Tuesday (March 6).

NM State will be part of a 15-team field that includes co-host UCLA, the defending national champions and current top-ranked team in the nation.  The field will also include top 25 teams Oklahoma State and co-host Pepperdine, along with Aggie in-state rival New Mexico.  Rounding out the field are Brigham Young, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Sonoma State, Stanford, UNLV, Washington State and Wisconsin.

There are six Aggie golfers making the trip to California.  The five-member Aggie team will consist of freshman Laura Barron, sophomores Demi Mak, Mieke Canan and Amelie Buhl and senior Ashley Elias.  Sophomore Lindsay Reeve will also be at the tournament but will be competing as an individual golfer, meaning her score will only count towards the individual totals but will not be added to the Aggie total team score.

This is the third year of the Bruin-Wave Invitational.  The first two were held at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, Calif.  NM State also participated in both previous Bruin-Wave Invitationals and has three current golfers who have played in the tournament.

During the inaugural Bruin-Wave Invitational in 2010, Elias finished with a three-round total of 249 placing her in a tie for 87th.  The Aggies finished 17th out of 18 teams.

The Aggies improved on their 2010 performance during last year's Bruin-Wave Invitational.  Current Aggie golfers Mak and Canan were part of an Aggie team that finished 10th out of 15 teams in the 2011 tournament.  Individually, Mak finished tied for 39th with a three-round total score of 231, while Canan finished tied for 67th with a three-round total score of 241.

The five golfers that make up the Aggie team headed to California also represented NM State in the team's most recent tournament, The UNLV Spring Invitational held in Boulder City, Nev. (Feb. 20-21).  The Aggies finished 10th as a team in Nevada aided by Mak's tie for 16th place finish.  Elias, Barron, Canan and Buhl finished 48th, 49th, tied for 50th and tied for 52nd respectively.
