CLE ELUM, Wash. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team concluded the first round of the 2014 NCAA West Regional on Thursday by shooting a 29-over-par 317 at the par-72, 6,252-yard Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort.

The 22nd-seeded Aggies will begin round two in a three-way tie for 21st place along with two teams ranked in the top 50 in the country, San Diego State and Gonzaga.

Young golfers have stepped up all season long for NM State, so it is no surprise that the Aggie with the least experience in the tournament is the one leading the squad after day one.

Freshman and New Mexico native Kristen Cline, playing in only her fifth tournament of the season, leads NM State after carding a 6-over 78 on Thursday to finish in a tie for 75th place.

Three of her teammates are right behind Cline as fellow freshman Camille Orito is one shot behind at 7-over 79 and in a log jam of 13 golfers tied for 80th place while sophomores Kacey Dalpes and Viviana Macias will begin the second round at 8-over 80 and in a group that is tied for 93rd place.  Freshman Valeria Macias rounds out the Aggie squad at 14-over 86 and in a tie for 121st place.

Defending national champion and No. 1 in the country Southern California leads the field after the first day and is the only team under par at 4-under 284.  Host Washington is four shots back at even par 288 while Arizona State is five back at 1-over 289.

Rounding out the top-eight teams that have placed themselves in position to advance to the NCAA Championship are Texas A&M, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Iowa State and UC Davis.

Indvidually, Kyung Kim of USC leads with a first-round score of 6-under-par 66.  Arizona State’s Noemi Jimenez and Marijosse Navarro of Texas A&M are both one shot back at 5-under 67 and in a tie for second place.

The West Regional continues Friday with the second round and concludes on Saturday with the final 18 holes.  Friday’s round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. (MDT) with the first NM State golfer set to tee off at 9:25 a.m.

Remember that live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com throughout the tournament so that fans can follow the action live hole-by-hole.
