MESA, Ariz. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team carded a 21-over-par 309 during the first round of the 2014 WAC Women’s Golf Championship on Friday at the par-72, 6,163-yard Longbow Golf Club.

The Aggies head into round two of the conference championship in second place, seven shots behind leader Idaho, which shot a total-team score of 14-over 302 on Friday.  Seattle U, at 35-over 323, rounds out the top 3.

A total of 14 golfers shot 8-over or better in round one, NM State has four of those golfers.  Sophomore Viviana Macias leads the way for the Aggies after shooting a 3-over-par 75, aided by back-to-back birdies on holes nine and 10.

Macias will start the second round in a tie for third place with the Idaho’s Cassie McKinley and Kaitlyn Oster.  The trio is a couple of shots behind leader Leilani Kim, also of Idaho, who sits at 1-over 73, and one shot behind Grand Canyon’s Charlotte Jaengkit who is in second with a first-round score of 2-over 74.

Fellow NM State sophomore Kacey Dalpes finished one shot behind Macias at 4-over 76.  She will start Saturday’s second round in a tie for sixth place with Dorsey Addicks of Seattle.  Dalpes led the Aggies with three birdies on the day, including two on par-3 holes.

Freshman Valeria Macias will also start in the top 10 on Saturday.  The younger Macias sister shot a 6-over 78 on Friday to place her in sole possession of ninth place.

Freshman Camille Orito finished just outside of the top 10 after carding an 8-over 80 in round one.  She will start the second round in a four-way tie for 11th place.  Orito did, however, have the shot of the day for NM State and perhaps the best shot of the entire round.  The Aggie freshman drained her first eagle of her career after marking a 3 on the par-5 ninth hole.  It was the only eagle on the day for any team.

Rounding out the NM State squad is the team’s third freshman, Kristen Cline, who finished in a tie for 34th place after carding a 15-over 87 on Friday.  Cline had two birdies on the day, but struggled in the sixth and 18th holes, marking a combined 9-over in just those two holes.

The WAC Championship continues on Saturday with the second 18-hole round.  The third and final 18 holes will be played on Sunday.  Golfers are set to tee off beginning at 8 a.m. (MDT) on Saturday.  The first Aggie golfer is scheduled to hit the course at 9:40 a.m.
