LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 4, 2012) - The New Mexico State women's golf team is hosting the 2012 Price's "Give Em' Five" Intercollegiate golf tournament beginning Monday, Oct. 8, and running through Wednesday, Oct. 10.
The three-round tournament will be played at the par 72, 6,319-yards New Mexico State University Golf Course. There will be one 18-hole round played on each day of the tournament with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (MT) slated for each round.
NM State will be part of a 13-team field that also includes: I-10 rival UTEP, Idaho, Washington State, North Texas, Nevada, Nebraska, Boise State, Colorado State, Brigham Young University, Cincinnati, Utah Valley State and Kansas, which is coming off a win in their home tournament. There will also be several players participating as individuals and not part of a team.
"The field for the Price's "Give Em Five" is loaded with all the great mid-major university teams," head coach Jackie Booth said. "The NM State team and coaches are very excited to host and show off our golf course and southern New Mexico hospitality. This is our only home tournament so we encourage all Aggie fans to come out and watch the future LPGA professionals play here at the NMSU Golf Course. It is free and these girls are good!"
The Aggies were also part of the Jayhawk's tournament in Lawrence, Kan., the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational (Sept. 24-25). It was the second tournament of young season for NM State. The Aggies opened their fall season with a 17th place finish at the Colonel Wollenberg's Ram Classic held in Fort Collins, Colo. (Sept. 10-11). They had better results in Kansas, finishing in a tie for sixth out of 13 teams and shooting the lowest round out of any team during the final round of the tournament.
Competing for NM State next week as part of the five-player team will be senior Aileen Meredith, junior Amelie Buhl, sophomores Laura Barron and Paige Darwin and freshman Kacey Dalpes. Also participating as individuals for the Aggies will be seniors Cheryl Lo and Marisa Bautista and junior Mieke Canan. This will be Darwin and Canan's first competition of the season.
The Aggies have been led by the senior-freshman duo of Meredith and Dalpes. They have been the top two finishers for NM State in the first two tournaments.
Dalpes, a native of Alamogordo and the two-time defending state high school champ, finished in a tie for 30th in Fort Collins, the best finish of the tournament for NM State. Meredith, meanwhile, finished in a tie for 11th, just a couple of shots out of the top 10, at the Sunflower Invitational. Her finish not only was a team-best, it is the best finish for an Aggie so far this season. Meredith also has the lowest round of the season for NM State, shooting a round of 2-over-par 74 during the final round in Kansas. Dalpes average score per round of 77.50, meanwhile, is the best average on the Aggie squad.
NM State has hosted the Price's "Give Em' Five" Intercollegiate since the 2000 season. The Aggies won the inaugural tournament and have won the tournament on two other occasions (2006, 2010). This will be the 13th year of the tournament.
Last year's tournament consisted of 16 teams and was won by Baylor University which finished with a total score of 4-under-par 860, one shot ahead of the University of Idaho. The individual title was shared by Baylor's Jaclyn Jansen and Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro, both finished at 5-under-par 211.
NM State has hosted a women's golf collegiate tournament since 1984. Before 2000, the tournament was known as the Diet Coke-Roadrunner Invitational.
