NM State Menís Golf Finish Tied for Fifth at Arizona Intercollegiate

Tucson, Ariz. – The New Mexico State men’s golf team opened the 2014 spring season by tying for fifth at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the par-71, 7,282-yard Sewailo Golf Club. The Aggies carded the second lowest team score of the third round, a 3-over par, 287. NM State finished the tournament at 21-over par, 873 (291-295-287).

“I’m really excited about the way we played this week in our first tournament of the spring,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “This is a good golf course but we made good decisions and good shots both days. If we continue this type of play all spring, good things will happen for this team.”

Junior Pat Beyhan led NM State by tying for fifth overall with a three-round score of 1-over par, 214 (68-74-72). He carded two birdies in the final round on his way to a 1-over par, 72. Sophomore Kevin Fadke II finished tied for 10th after a final round score of 3-over par, 74, including four birdies in the round. Fadke II finished the tournament at 4-over par, 217 (72-71-74).

Junior Brett Walker had the best round of the day for NM State with a 2-under par, 69. Walker almost cracked the top-20, placing 22nd overall with a three-round score of 7-over par, 220. He also recorded a team-high five birdies in the final round.

Freshman Travis Benson carded a final round score of 1-over par, 72, tallying four birdies on the afternoon. Benson finished tied for 28th overall at 9-over par, 222 (75-75-72). Senior Zach Adams rounded out the Aggie competitors with his best round of the tournament a 3-over par, 74. His round consisted of two birdies and an eagle. Adams finished the tournament at 22-over par, 235 (77-84-74).


No. 4 California won the team tournament with a three-round score of 1-over par, followed by Arizona (+16), No. 19 New Mexico (+18), No. 25 Southern California (+20), NM State (+21) and No. 38 BYU (+21). California’s Brandon Hagy and Joel Stalter tied for first-place overall at 2-under par.

The Aggies will be back in action on Feb. 21-23 at the Bayou City Classic in Houston, Texas.
