HENDERSON, Nev. - The New Mexico State fired a 5-over par, 293 in the first round of the 2012 Men's Golf WAC Championships at the par 72, 7,332 yard Rio Secco Golf Club and are fourth overall as a team, just six shots out of the lead.
Junior Justin Shin led the Aggies with a 2-under par, 70, recording three birdies on the day. Shin is currently in a tie for fourth overall.
Senior Zachery Fullerton was up and down in his first round of the championships, finishing with a 1-over par, 73. Fullerton carded three birdies on the day and is tied for 12th.
Freshman Cosme Beamonte was even par going into the final hole of the day but shot a bogey to place him at 1-over par, 73 after round one. Beamonte had a team-high four birdies in the first round and is tied for 12th overall.
Senior Gaston De La Torre struggled in the first round with a 5-over par, 77. He would birdie the 18th hole, carding a total of two birdies, tying him for 25th.
Redshirt senior Miko Alejandro shot a first round score of 7-over par, 79. He had three birdies on the day and is currently tied for 30th overall.
Sean McMullen of Idaho leads the tournament as an individual after a 7-under par, 65 in round one. Idaho and Fresno State lead the tournament at 1-under par, followed by San Jose State (+2), NM State, Utah State (+6), Nevada (+13), Hawai'i (+16) and Louisiana Tech (+16).
The Aggies and rest of the field will be back on the course Tuesday morning for the second round of the 2012 WAC Championship.
