Eugene, Ore. - The New Mexico State men's golf team posted a final round of 1-over par, 289 at the Oregon Duck Invitational Tuesday to take fifth place as a team. The Aggies finished the tournament at 15-over par. The team's 1-over par score was its best of the tournament.
"The course was easier and the pins were easier today, along with the weather being better was a big factor in a lot of good scores today," head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. "Over the past few tournaments we have finished very strong in the final rounds. I would like to see us get off to a better start in the first two rounds of the tournament. We can play with the best teams in the country and I have confidence in our team. If we continue to believe in ourselves we can turn a lot of heads."
Senior Tim Madigan led the Aggies fired the second best individual round of the final round with a 5-under par, 67, recording six birdies and just one bogey in the final round. Madigan tied for 10th overall with a three-round score of 3-under par, 213. This is the second straight tournament Madigan post finished in the top-10.
Junior Gaston De La Torre carded three birdies and an eagle in his final round as he posted a score of even par, 72. De La Torre was 3-over par, 219 for the tournament tying him for 26th overall. Junior Joon Lee recorded a 3-over par, 75 in the final round with just one birdie. Lee was 7-over par, 223 in his three rounds, tying for 42nd.
Sophomore Will Holdridge recorded a three round score of 13-over par, 229, tying for 57th overall after a final round score of 3-over par, 75. Holdridge recorded one birdie in his final round of play. Sophomore Justin Shin rounded out the Aggie competitors with a final round of 9-over par, 81. Shin recorded three birdies in the final, finishing the tournament at 14-over par, 230.
Oklahoma State took the team title with a three round score of 10-under par, followed by Oregon (-8), Washington (+6) and Oregon State (+14). Washington's Chris Williams won the individual title with a 9-under par.
The Aggies will be back in action this coming weekend at the Border Olympics Golf Tournament in Laredo, Texas, March 25-26.
