Henderson, Nev. – The New Mexico State men’s golf team currently holds a six stroke lead after round one of the 2013 WAC Golf Championships, held at the par 72, 7,313-yard, Rio Secco Golf Club. The Aggies shot a 2-under par, 286 in round one.
“We played solid golf today,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “We started the round with several birdies and gave a few back in the middle of the round but really finished up strong. I’m excited to see what we do the next few days.”
Junior Willy Hogan and senior Derek Baade led NM State in round one with a 2-under par, 70. Both golfers carded four birdies in their first rounds and sit in a tie for second overall.
Freshman Kenneth Fadke recorded a 1-under par, 71, with three birdies in his round. He is currently tied for sixth overall. Sophomore Brett Walker was 3-over par, 75 in round one with three birdies as well, placing him in a tie for 23rd.
Senior Justin Shin struggled for the Aggies out of the gate, firing a 6-over par, 78 in round one. Shin had just one birdie in the first round. He is tied for 38th overall.
NM State leads the tournament at 2-under par, followed by Utah State (+4), UTSA (+5), UT Arlington (+6) and Idaho (+6). UTSA’s J.J. Lindsey leads the tournament at 3-under par.
