Release:  03/13/2013

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State men’s golf team will compete at the Don Puckette National Invitational Tournament, March 16-17, at Omni Tucson National Golf Club.

“We’ve worked a lot on our short game and talked about managing the golf course better,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “We also talked about hitting shots off the tee that will allow you to have a good position for a second shot and not just trying to hit the ball as far as you can. We have also been shooting a lot of mid-60 scores in practice so hopefully we can remember that we can shoot those types of score and translate those into tournament play.”

The 2013 Don Puckette NIT is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at Omni Tucson National Golf Club, a par 72, 7,094-yard layout. 36-holes will be played on Saturday, March 16 with continuous play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. MST. The final 18 holes will start at 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 17.

Seven of the teams in the field of 16 currently are ranked in the top 50 of the current Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, which includes (ranking): Arkansas (19), Hawaii, Long Beach State, Nevada, New Mexico (3), New Mexico State, Oklahoma State (13), San Diego, San Diego State, SMU (18), TCU (8), Texas A&M (27), UNLV (37), UTEP, Wyoming and host Arizona.

Justin Shin, Kenneth Fadke, Brett Walker, Derek Baade and Joey Martinez will represent the men’s golf program this weekend.  Last time out, the Aggies finished tied for 13th at the Bayou City Collegiate Championships. Shin tied for 18th overall.

Live tournament scoring will also be available at www.golfstat.com.
