Softball Host UTEP to Close out Rivalry Series

LAS CRUCES, N.M.— The New Mexico State softball team hosts I-10 rival UTEP in the final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, March 25. The Aggies and the Miners have met twice this season splitting the games.

NM State won the first meeting between the rivals with a late-inning grand slam by junior Lacey Rother to lift the team to an 8-6 victory. The Miners then took the meeting in El Paso by going up 5-1 while NM State commited three errors.

All time, the Aggies and the Miners have met 31 times with NM State leading the series 21-10. The Aggies have won the last seven of eight meetings, dating back to 2011.

UTEP (12-20) finds its top hitter in senior outfielder Erika Arcuri with a batting average of .393. This season, Arcuri has seen 30 starts with a total of 42 hits and 23 runs. Following Arcuri is fellow senior Miraya Montiel. With a batting average of .370, Montiel has 30 hits with four doubles and one home run. 

The Miners pitching staff has senior Colleen Hohman who has a 4.80 ERA along with a record of 3-4. Giving up 70 hits in the season, Hohman has pitched an average of 54.0 innings with 25 strikeouts.

NM State is 17-15 this season and looking to break a four-game losing streak. Junior Staci Rodriguez leads the Aggies with a .427 batting average and 32 RBI. She is tied for the team lead with 10 home runs while tallying 35 hits and 29 runs of her own.

With 25 RBI and 10 home runs, sophomore Fiana Finau is another Aggie slugger to look out for with a .337 batting average.

In the circle, sophomore Makayla McAdams leads with a 3.92 ERA and a 6-3 record. She’s pitched 60.2 innings and has one shutout in her two complete games. Senior reliever Celisha Walker (3.98 ERA) is 5-5 this season and had pitched 68.2 innings with two saves and 42 strikeouts.
