LUBBOCK, TEXAS – While the Aggies finished the game with seven hits, it was two homeruns that were responsible for the 4-3 win over UT Arlington on Sunday, March 9, to close out the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Aggies improve to 15-10 this season after going 2-2 in the tournament.

“We had some good, clutch hitting, solid pitching and clean defense this weekend,” head coach Kathy Rodolph said. “So although our record was 2-2, we got better and the weekend progressed. That gives us much needed momentum for this coming weekend.”

Both teams finished the game with seven hits, but the runs did not come in until the sixth and seventh innings. Senior Alyssa Ruiz and junior Staci Rodriguez hit two homeruns to combine for the four Aggie runs it took to beat UTA. The Mavs’ three runs came off two homers of their own in the sixth.

Sophomore Makayla McAdams made her fourth appearance of the weekend and worked 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Senior Celisha Walker came in to finish the game in the top of the seventh to get the win and move to a 5-4 record this season.

McAdams and the Aggies sent UTA away in order in the first inning and allowed just one hit in each of the next three. The Mavs got one runner on base in the fifth, but she was left stranded as well.

The Aggies walked the bases loaded in the first and saw three hits in the next three frames. Freshman Susie Chandler went 2-for-3 on the day with a single in the second and a double in the fourth.

It took until the sixth inning for NM State to plate its first run. A single by pinch hitter Brennalyn Nakamura with two outs brought Ruiz to the plate. She hit a homerun over center field to bring her and Nakamura around for a 2-0 lead.

The Mavs came up in the top of the seventh with a solo home run with just one out. That was followed up by a single to right to bring up a pinch hitter, who hit a two-run bomb over right-center to tie things up at 2-2.

The Aggies took their last chance at bat by a lead-off single by junior Lacey Rother. She stole second to get into scoring position before Rodriguez came to the plate with two outs. Her two-RBI homerun over center marked the second walk-off home run for the junior this season. Rodriguez now has nine homeruns and 29 RBI this season.

NM State continues on the road with a single game at San Jose State, March 13 at 1 p.m. The team then travels to Fresno State for five games beginning with Pacific at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, March 14. The Aggies also face St. Mary’s for the second time this season at 9:15 p.m. On Saturday, NM State meets Colorado State at 7 p.m. and host Fresno State at 9:15 p.m. To close out the weekend, the Aggies face Cal Poly at 12:15 p.m.
