RUSTON, La. – The New Mexico State softball team fell in the semifinal game of the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon to the San Jose State Spartans 3-1. The Aggies now must play an elimination game against either UT Arlington or Texas State at 6 p.m. this evening.

NM State had seven hits on the day with one run and went through all three of the pitchers in the loss. Senior Alex Newman took the loss as she gave up the three runs in her two innings at work. Freshman Makayla McAdams pitched the middle part of the game with 4.1 innings and five hits allowed. Junior Celisha Walked ended the game in the circle with one strikeout and no hits allowed.

San Jose State took an early lead in the top half of the first inning with two singles and a three-run home run in the top half of the first inning to get the initial lead of the game.

NM State was able to get runners on base in the second with a double by sophomore Malena Padilla and a single by senior Teresa Conrad. With two more Aggies singles in the fourth, it took until the bottom half of the sixth for the Aggies to plate their first and only run of the game.

The Aggies made a big comeback attempt with a three singles and a sacrifice fly to load the bases. Padilla came up with a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Brennalyn Nakamura and put the Aggies on the board late in the sixth inning. The next two runners were left on base with a pop up to the shortstop.

SJSU was able to get 11 hits off the Aggies with two in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth. An error and a single put Spartans on in the sixth, but NM State was able to end the inning before the runners could advance. SJSU had one final hit in the top of the seventh, but two groundouts and a strikeout by Walker ended the inning.

The Aggies made a valiant attempt with a standing double by freshman Emma Adams late in the seventh, she was moved over on a ground out to second by senior Amber Olive, but was eventually left stranded to end the game in favor of SJSU.

NM State will face the winner of the game in progress, UT Arlington versus Texas State. That game is set for 6 p.m. (MT). Keep up to date with the progress of the 2013 WAC Tournament on Twitter @NMStateAggies.
